Thoughts on Thursday: Guest Blogger

Hey all this is Amber here. I just got back from Canada last night so I decided to have one more guest blogger to give me a little break before I”m back to the ‘real world.’ This post is actually written by my mother from Treasure to Treasure. She is new to the blogger world and has some very insightful faith based posts.

“Playing on the same team”

Do you remember hearing at your wedding “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”  I bet you remember the “kiss the bride” part more than the statement before it!  I can tell you even after nearly 29 years of marriage we need to remind ourselves daily that we are “husband and wife”.  To me that means we are on the same team.  Our family is in to volleyball so it’s easy for me to picture a volleyball match going on. My husband and I are on the same side of the net, playing WITH each other, not against each other.

Just remembering that fact can change a whole conversation. When he wants to do supper first, then watch some TV and finish the night with planning the next days agenda and I want to plan the agenda over supper I just might stop to think that he’s really tired and needs some time to change gears before thinking about tomorrow. When I don’t stop to think like a team player, I insist on talking to him when he’s not ready to listen let alone contribute. He then gets irritated. I then get irritated…well you get the picture. It’s not team playing. It’s me bumping the ball to him and he’s not ready to play. So next time you start a conversation stop and think. Is your “team” ready to play?

You Capture: Get Low

All of these pictures are from the my vacation in Canada this week (I just got back last night.)

Laying down on the dock in the boat house.

Crouching down checking out the Canadian wildlife (more on that later.)

Rings on the first level of the deck I was on the second level at eye level with the higher level.

Kneeling down, that 20 incher looks huge from this view.

Five Ways to Make your Next Summer Outing Green and Healthy

This post is written by one of my blogger buddies, Cathy, go check out her blog Lets be Green Together for some more great hints and tips on a easy green lifestyle. Recently she did a post about fast food that would get anyone thinking, check that out here. Don’t forget I’m in Canada so I won’t be responding to any comments for a few days, but I will respond!

  1. Find a safe, but effective sunscreen and apply periodically. (Skin cancer is not pretty.)  A wonderful website to check out the safety of products you use, especially those that you put on your skin is www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.  It is a wonderful and trusted resource for all things from toothpaste to shampoo.  Note: For the first 15 minutes you can go without the sunscreen and soak up some much needed Vitamin D – the sunscreen will actually block this much needed nutrient from entering your body.
  2. Pack reusable water bottles for everyone in the family.  My family each has their own bottle, each with its own unique design.  No matter where we are headed, I pack a bottle for every one of us.  It saves us a lot of money and plastic makes me cringe, especially in the form of a water bottle.   We actually have a couple of extra reusable water bottles that I fill and bring as well, so if someone needs a refill  I don’t have to worry about buying an overly priced bottle at the store.
  3. Fill a cooler with healthy foods from fruit to sandwiches and veggies to nuts!  Don’t have a cooler?  Find a good deal and buy one!  Here’s why this one is important:  mainly, it saves a huge amount of money, especially if your destination is an amusement park.  Have you seen the prices there lately?  Expensive!  Also, most of what you buy to eat at those types of places is fried and unhealthy and not exactly “green” with the wasteful styrofoam trays and plastic utensils that are both just horrible for the environment.   So it may take a little time to prepare what you will pack, but believe me, when it comes time to need a quick snack or sit down for a meal, you will be so glad that you took the time to pack healthy food for you and your family.
  4. Pack several cloth napkins!  What did you say?  You don’t have any…..you only have paper napkins?  Excuse me while I hyperventilate.  Phew, that was a close call, but I’ll be fine.   I hope at the very least, you are buying napkins made of recycled materials, but I really hope you will start to replace them with cloth napkins.  I am personally on a very strict budget so I have always bought my cloth napkins on sale and often times on clearance.  I have a really varied and fun collection now and will never go back to paper again.
  5. If you have children and will be in the car for more than an hour, allow them to pack some sort of electronic gadget to entertain them.  That has nothing to do with being green or healthy, rather your insanity and keeping it intact.  Side note: for this tip to be successful, remember to actually charge those devices the night before because having the battery die during the trip is actually worse than not having anything in the first place, trust me!

Guest Blogger: the iheart blog

While I’m away, I thought it would be fun to have some guest posts. So here is guest blogger #1!

Hi, I’m Bec from the iheart blog. I started my blog as a way to improve my photography and be more creative. As a newlywed, decorating is not a huge part of our budget so I’ve enjoyed coming up with cheap, but fun, decorating projects. This one didn’t even cost me $5.

If you read my blog on a regular basis, you know I love going to our local farmer’s market. They actually have an online store where you can buy farmer’s market t-shirts, posters, bags, etc. I fell in love with this print:

The only problem is, we aren’t really in the market for poster sized art at the moment, so I refrained from buying it. I was hoping they’d offer them in postcard size because that would be perfect for what I had in mind. I waited, they never made postcards, so I took matters into my own hands.

First I bought four picture frames from Dollar Tree.

I popped out the glass and cardboard and layed them out on my in-laws driveway.

I picked this beautiful shade of spray paint to jazz them up.

Then I got sprayin’.

I ended up having to flip them over once they were dry to be able to get the bottom edges coated evenly.

I printed off my re-sized images (I would have used photo paper, but mine has magically disappeared.) I placed the glass over the image to get the exact size needed for the frame.

I then selected 2 of my new scrapbook papers that coordinated with the images I had printed off.

Then I put everything in the frames.

Since we live in an apartment, I really try not to put anymore holes in the wall than necessary. Since these frames are plastic, they were light enough that I could use foam adhesive squares to stick them on the walls.

Now it was time to put them in place! I love how cheerful they are.

Perked that wall right up. The best part is, I could change the art in them whenever I feel like it FOR FREE.

P.S. If the farmer’s market ever did offer the prints in a smaller size I would totally buy them and put them in the frames rather than my knock-offs.
