Baby its cold outside (pt 1)

I don’t know about the rest of you Midwestern type people but its getting cold and snowy up here. I found myself looking through out honeymoon pics last night dreaming of warmer days. So I thought I would share on of the most memorable days from the trip (OK who am I kidding they were all memorable.)

On Grand Cayman island we got to swim with sting rays. They were on a sand bar and pretty docile  since people were there almost everyday, but it was still a little unnerving.

See how great this picture is? That is because its not with a disposable water proof camera its with an Olympus Stylus 1050 SW it is waterproof, freezproof and dropproof up to 5 feet. They don’t make this exact model anymore but they do have 3 new ones to pick from. So are they really waterproof? Take a look for yourself:

Just for fun, here I am kissing a stingray.

Winter Driving

Wwell if you haven’t figured it out by now I live “up north” in Minnesota. The weather for tonight/tomorrow isn’t supposed to be great and that got me thinking about winter driving.

First of all prep your car:

  • Jumper cables
  • Cat litter or sand
  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper
  • Warm clothes gloves, a hat, sturdy boots, warm jacket
  • Blankets
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First aid kit also pack necessary medications in case you are stuck on the road
  • Food pack items containing protein such as nuts and energy bars, also canned fruit and a portable can opener are good additions, don’t forget baby food and pet food
  • Water
  • Fully charge your cell phone.

Driving hints:

  • Clean off your headlights
  • Allow more time (listen to the weather the night before and wake up early.)
  • Keep your gas tank full.
  • Drive for conditions – slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering, and slower braking in winter conditions.
  • Use your headlights.
  • Don’t use cruise control.
  • Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps,
    bridges, or shady spots.
  • Be careful and payattention to other drivers.

Green Christmas: Eat Green

Here are a few hints on how to make your holiday dinner a little greener.

  • Buy local, try to find a local farm to buy your turkey and vegetables from. This reduces transport and packaging.
  • Back as much from scratch as possible. This is not only cheaper but tastes better and means a large factory doesn’t have to make it.
  • Use real plates and silverware, and then wash them in your energy efficient dishwasher. Check out this article at Treehugger.com for more information.
  • Use cloth napkins. They are prettier and softer than paper, plus your just plain not wasting paper.
  • Remember to buy organic when it counts, food with thin skin that you eat. Check out the dirty dozen for more info.

What ideas do you have?
