I know its silly but I’m so excited about this project! It was simple, cheap and green! Can’t get better than that.
Here is how easy it was I’m only going to show you 3 pictures.
Supplies:
Tin Snips
Rubber Gasket squares (in the plumbing repair section)
Faucet
Nut for back of faucet
Screwdriver
Scissors
Large Trash Can (previous owners left this behind)
Screen
Rope
So here is how simple it is:

Use the screwdriver to poke a hole in the bottom of the trash can and then cut a hole smaller than the faucet with the tin snips.

Cut the rubber in to 2×2 squares, trace the faucet and then cut a hole inside the line, for a tight fight.
Then put it all together:

Have 2 rubber gaskets on the outside of the faucet and 2 on the inside. Attach with the nut

Cut a piece of screen and tie it around the top for bug protection.

Place on top of 16 inch cement blocks for ease of filling your watering can.
Plans for the future:
- I’m going to run one of those black flex gutters from the downspout to a hole cut in the trash can lid.
- Right now leaking isn’t a problem, but I may add a bit of calking just incase.

That’s pretty cool! And just think of what you can use all that rain water for! I’d build one but I can’t think of where we would store one in order to catch rain water…

I have been wanting to make a rain barrel. Have you had a problem with small bugs because you are using a screen instead of a lid? Since I want to make one I thought I would ask
