Guest Post: Beat the heat, Greening your AC.

A few weeks ago I  got an e-mail from Jennifer asking if I would be interested in having her guest post with a few hints on Air conditioning and how to make it more efficient, green and save money. Sounded good to me and I knew I had a busy work week coming up so I said yes!  Here ya go:

We all talk about Going Green, but very few of us actually take steps to turn it into a reality. That being said, Interstate Air Conditioning & Heating, a leading NYC installation company, wants to help you do your part to conserve some energy! Below is a short list of things you can do to be a little Greener this summer:

1.
AC Unit

  • Sometimes it’s less expensive to physically replace a unit, instead of constantly fixing it.
  • In addition to the repair costs, older units tend to use more energy every month.
  • In this economy, we understand the need to save money however you can. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to the purchase of an air conditioning unit. The less expensive the unit, the lower its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating is. An efficient central air conditioning unit has a SEER rating of at least 14.

Purchase a High-Efficiency

An air conditioner with a SEER rating of 8 (which is the lowest) will run you $100 in energy costs every month, while an AC with a rating of 21 (which is the highest) will run you just $39 per month; that is a 61% price cut each and every month! Weigh saving a few hundred
now against saving over $700 every year and we think you’ll see our point!

2.
Thermostat

Programmable thermostats can actually save you up to $180 a year in energy costs! This great little invention allows you to set specific temperatures throughout the day and night. You can have it turn off during work hours, and start cooling again right before you get
home in the evening. This is a great energy saver because you’re no longer pumping your AC into an empty home.

3.
AC Unit Installed

As an Air Conditioning & Heating company that specializes in
maintenance
, we always recommend getting your unit maintained 2-4 a year, depending on whether or not it cools and heats your home.

Have an Accurately-Sized Unit

like trying to fit an 18-wheeler into a car garage, it is extremely important for your air conditioning unit to be the correct size for the rooms it is intended to cool. If your AC is too much big or small for your home, it’s not going to run efficiently. It’ll waste energy and cost
tons in energy bills and/or repairs. Your best bet is to have a certified technician evaluate what sized unit would work best for you, so that you can begin saving energy (and money) instantly.
