Quick hints for card making

So as I’ve talked about this before I do bulk card making at my house about once a month or so to keep up with birthdays thanks you’s and all of that. Well I haven’t done that in a while + I’ve been lax on sending cards (bad Amber bad) but this month I decided to get on top of it again.  Last night I realized that if I didn’t get my brothers card in the mail today he wouldn’t get it on time :( Here are a few hints that can help you put together a last minute card if your stash has run out.

1.  Buy paper sets. I like to buy AC Cardstock sets when they go on clearance (75% off!!!) All the papers in the packs coordnate and the backs are white so when you fold them you can easily write on the inside.

2. Keep your scraps to make the next card. If you don’t have time to make 2 cards and your using 12×12 paper chances are you have enought paper left to make a second card. Keep those scraps together for quick card making in the future. This card was made quickly from the scraps left over from my Grandmas birthday card.

 3. Use vinyl instead of paper. I just thought of this last night, how have I never thought about it before?!? If you use paper you have to cut it then use double sided tape to attach it. If your using small or skinny pieces that can be annoying.  So I used my cricut to cut out the phrase and the outline from two different colors and then just used them as stickers.

4. Quick embelishments. Keep a stock of brads buttons and other items you can quickly add to give your card some pop. My Sizzix Texture Boutique adds embosing and texture to a card really quickly.Photobucket

5. Make Bulk Cards. Then when you have some extra time make a bulk batch of cards with blank areas for quick stamping Get Well, Happy Birthday or Thank You!

Stolen Ideas: Re-Styled Valentines Shirt

There is this super cool chick over at Wobisobi who last year did 52 Re-Style projects, so many of them are on my to do list. Well this one is now on my done list! Just in time to wear it on my valentines day date tonight (under my Wild sweatshirt of course.) Check out the inspiration. Wobisobi’s  Heart Shaped , Off The Shoulder Tee-Shirt.

Check out Wobisobi’s post for full instructions but I’ll point out a few things I did differently.

I started with one of Mac’s old Tee-Shirts and one of my old too short tank tops. Along with some clips and a heart pattern (since I stink at free handing.)Supplies, Uploaded with Snapbucket

I clipped the shirt to a magazine and then traced around the heart with pencil.

The rest I did step by step and here is what I ended up with

Not bad huh? How do you think it compares?

Keurig + Vinyl = Pretty

Have you seen all of the great Kitchen-Aid Mixer vinyl art around Pinterest and such? I think they look great, but my Kitchen-Aid gets put away after using it so I didn’t want to waste good vinyl on it. Instead I looked at my counter and what did I see but my Keurig. Its just a small personal sized one but that is all the bigger we can handle in our tiny kitchen. I decided it needed a little dressing up so with a little help of some silver vinyl and my Cricut/Gypsy I made it a little decor.

Never underestimate the use of transfer tape, this stuff is amazing. Keeps all the letters evenly spaced and lets you see where you are placing it.

The font is Cricut’s Lyrical Letters and the coffee cup and ‘steam’ are both from Gypsy Wonderings (only available on the gypsy.)

So what do you think? Like it? I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, plus good news if you want to buy some vinyl head on over to Expressions Vinyl and use the code BEMINE for 10% Off!! That code ends tomorrow Wednesday February 8th but keep an eye on the side there >>>>> for future coupons.

Hope you find some simple ways to use vinyl in one of your projects this week!

Scrappy Pin Cushion

Use up your fabric scraps and make something reuseable (double green!) with this great Scrappy Pin Cushion from Vixen Made.

Shimmering Candle Holders

I would bet that everyone has at lease one of these boring candle holders or maybe a extra vase or two that could use some umph. Here is a great idea of how to do that from Burton Avenue.

Hanger Bag Clips

Not sure if its a craft but its a project for sure a simple one at that. Make bag clips from old plastic pants hangers! Thanks Crafting in the Rain!

Simple personalized blanket

This weekend I decided to take an hour out of my day and do something ‘fun’ I’ve realized lately that I don’t do that enough. In fact Sunday I took the whole darn day and did nothing. I had a mild panic attack when I saw the dishes before bed, but hey they can get done tomorrow right? No one is going to die.

Anyway back to my fun project, I bought some cute minky material a while back to make a blanket for Cooper, nothing fancy just sew up the edges and call it done. But I decided it would be fun to personalize it with some iron-on vinyl too.

  • First of all I didn’t know how the iron-on vinyl would work with minky fabric so I looked through my stash to find a cotton based fabric to use as my surface for the iron on.
  • Secondly place your vinyl on the cutting mat shiny side down.  This is very important, if you do it the wrong way your letters are going to end up backwards and hard to work with.

(left is shiny side right is matt)

  • Then use your vinyl cutting machine to cut out whatever name, word or design you would like, then reverse it before cutting it out. (refer to your manual for how to on your machine) If you happen to use a gypsy like me here are the two things you need to know for reversing the text click the advanced tab > the reverse button, see the orange circles.

  • Go ahead and cut out your vinyl. I’m not going to suggest a pressure or depth setting because its different for every machine, you may want to play with some scraps first. But I will say this, it depends on the newness of your blade. You want to keep a light hand enough to cut through the vinyl and not through the plastic.
  • Next cut off any extra vinyl to use later and then start removing the extra vinyl from around the word.  Peel it off your cutting mat (should still be on the plastic) and place it on your fabric ready to iron.
  • Make sure your iron is on a non-steam heat around 305 degrees (basically the correct heat setting for your type of fabric) and start to iron. It only takes 10-15 seconds to bond, give it a few more seconds just to be sure and then peel off the plastic protector sheet. If anything sticks just lay it back down and iron again.
  • Next I simply used my cutting mat to square it up and cut out a perfect rectangle.  I lined up one of the black lines with the bottom of the letters and then cut the bottom and the right then reversed the process for the top and left.
  • Then I pinned back the edges attached it to on side of my blanket and sewed it on. I’ll be honest here jersey is a very floppy fabric and this isn’t perfect but hey its for my dog. For a cleaner look I would suggest a sturdier quilting fabric for this part.
  • That’s it. I lined up the minky right sides together, sewed all around leaving about 2 inches open on one side. Flipped it right side out and hand stitched the hole closed. With minky you don’t even need any batting but if you wanted to you could add a layer and do a quick quilt job. I just used two 1.5 yard pieces and it was the perfect size for the puppy or a child.
One to get some iron on vinyl?
