Why I’m Green {Vitamins}

Now I’m sure many of you are already thinking to yourselves how are vitamins a green thing? Honestly until pretty recently I didn’t think it was, honestly I didn’t think much about the whole topic. I took a vitamin…if I remembered and that was the end of it. Then I got pregnant and I started looking into the quality of the vitamins I was taking.

Did you know that some vitamins containe ingrediants like aaspartame and hydroginated oils?!? How about corn syrup, corn starch and artificial coloring? Many of these ingrediants are some of the first on the list, which means there are more of them in your vitamins then there are vitamins!

I won’t go into detail about all the chemicals right now because that would make this post pretty long so we will save that for another post.

I completly understand that vitamins need bonding agents and that there is really no way to get 100%  natural sources of vitamins packed into a little pill, however I do know there are better and more natural ways to do it.

One option I’ve seen as a bonding agent or filler  is microcrystalline cellulose it is an in insoluble fiber which means it can’t be absorbed into the blood stream and therefore  has little to no side effects.  Source here

I was amazed when I switched brands. Personally I noticed a  huge energy level increas about 2 weeks after I started the new brand. Hubby noticed an energy increase as well but more exciting for us he noticed a substantial decrease in his lactose intolorance!!! Obviously a good vitamins with quality ingredients makes a difference.

I’ve done my research and found a brand that works for me, but the truth is there are MANY good companies out there that sell better vitamin choices and they arn’t all exspensive.  I don’t want to become a product pusher on this blog however I have found an amazing vitamin that I love and the price is right too! Thoughts on Thursday {Pressure to be ‘Pretty’}

I know this is marriage related, but hey if you have kids well then it is….so yeah.

TOT

We see it everywhere, on TV, in the movies, in magazines, we are consistently being told what pretty is, how skinny we need told to be, and so on.  I know I’m a little slow to respond here but mostly that is because I wasn’t sure I had anything to say about this publicly. However its been a few weeks since this was broadcast and I’m still upset about it so I thought I would share. Did you all see the recent reports about the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch’s stance on who, and specifically what size of people where their clothes? Here are a few quotes from a recent artical on Elite Daily that re-published quotes from a 2006 Salon article.

“He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” Lewis said. “He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.”

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told the site. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla. You don’t alienate anybody, but you don’t excite anybody, either,” he told Salon.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!

As if there isn’t enough pressure out there we need someone just straight out saying this??? Umm no! Now I will admit I’ve NEVER shopped at A&F, yes really never, and here is why:

  • I’ve never liked their 1/2 naked people advertising campaign (if your selling clothes shouldn’t your models be wearing them?!?)
  • I can’t afford them.
  • Their stores give me a headache just walking by (from the pefume smell.)
  • When I was looking in the windows in high school (when I was TINY) I was pretty sure I would be a size large….dumb.
  • Now this ^^^

Without going on a complete rant, why would we support a company like this? I was excited to hear about students taking a stand and even protesting the company (reported in People Magazine.) All of this has prompted an apology from the company that you can find in this Huffington Post artical:

 “We look forward to continuing this dialogue and taking concrete steps to demonstrate our commitment to anti-bullying in addition to our ongoing support of diversity and inclusion. We want to reiterate that we sincerely regret and apologize for any offense caused by comments we have made in the past which are contrary to these values.”

This ‘apology’ is honestly the most upsetting part of this to me.  These comments were initialy made back in 2006, 7 years ago, and only recently brought to light again. Talk is cheap, if you were really sorry as stated above you would have made changes along time ago and yet on their website (I just checked) girls pants only go up to size 10 and shirts only to a size L. Why didn’t you take these ‘concrete steps’ you are promising before. This isn’t the first firestorm you have cause about the exact same topic….

So yeah, as I climb off my soap box I would just like to state that my daughter will never wear A&F clothing, she woudln’t have anyway honestly but not I will make double sure.

So what do you think of this whole controversy? Think is being blown out of proportion, agree with me 100%? Either way I want to hear from you.

Meal Planning and Healthy Snacks

So we have a dilemma at the LLG house, we are running out of healthy meal ideas. By that I mean we open the fridge and have no inspiration. So we end up either making something un-healthy like Macaroni and Cheese or going out. When we are out we pick healthier options (normally) but that is still not as good as eating at home. Last Thursday night was a particularly bad night… ahem well for me, Mac ended up with a salad I had a brownie earthquake and a banana for dinner.

So this week we are going to meal plan, and make sure that we have  all the ingredients ready and in the fridge. That way we have no excuse, everything will be there ready to go. We have food already for tonight and we are grocerie shopping when I get home.

Another food thing I’m working on (hubby is much better at this lately) is healthy snacks. I tend to reach for candy and carbs lately….and not the good kind of carbs more like the donut kind. So I’m keeping a list of healthy options we have in the house on my fridge so I don’t default to the bad choices.

My current favorites include:

  • Apple or pear slices and cheese
  • String Cheese
  • Yogurt and granola
  • Yogurt and fruit
  • Banana and Peanut Butter

What healthy snacks do you like? Please share I need options ;)

Food = Fuel

Sometimes I like to convince myself that a little indulgence here and there won’t hurt me. Most of the time that is true, however I have a problem with the ‘little’ part.  I have a little sugar, I want more. I eat a few crackers and go back and eat 1/2 the box. I have one McDonalds french fry and I’m craving them for days….

When I was trying to loose weight it was easier to avoid these ‘extras’ they were simply extra calories in my mind. However now I’m not afraid of calories, in fact I need more calories these days. Not double or eating for two but more than before.

This weekend was tough, the fridge was pretty much empty, no protein at all and we didn’t have time to go shopping till yesterday (Sunday.) Going out or picking up dinner was a much easier decision. There are ways to do that and stay healthy but not around us. Unfortunately all the restaurants that are in driving distance to pick something up or have it delivered are greasy un-healthy joints. Applebees, Domino’s, McDonalds and Taco Bell just to name a few.

Thursday was a long day at work for the hubby, he was supposed to cook and I forgot to pick up chicken on the way home. I surprised him with delivery pizza for him and our friends, pasta (from domino’s) for me. Friday I can’t even remember, Saturday I had McDonalds for lunch since I was in a rush and fries sounded good, and then Vietnamese food for dinner. Not the healthy stuff we get downtown, the greasy stuff we get at the place near us. Sunday was breakfast out with the in laws, and at night was our left over Vietnamese…

I’m feeling it today, even though I had plenty of sleep most of the weekend (one bad night) I’m tired, my legs are heavy and my eyes are drooping. I’m sooo glad I’m only working 4 hours today( Monday.)

All this leads to one thing, food is fuel. If you fill yourself with junk your going to run out of energy and mental stamina way before if your eating good clean food. Keeping all of the real food groups as part of your daily diet is what you need to keep running efficiently. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein.

Is there more to it than that? Sure. Is that a great place to start? YES! Cut out as much un-healthy dining out as you can.

Natural Skin Care {Face Wash}

For a number of reasons my skin care line has wavered back over into chemical land nothing too bad really it was a Mary Kay botanical line. But not great either. Plus I didn’t see a noticeable change in my skin condition so why continue? So I’ve decided to change back to a natural skin care system. I’ve decided to break this down in to steps to make it easier:

  • Step 1 all natural soap and only wash when needed.
  • Step 2 Find a natural moisturizer before I run out.
  • Step 3 Look in to make-up alternatives to support the natural soap/moisturizer.

First off in the interest of not buying more stuff what did I already have on hand? After looking in my ‘soap bin’ (its so nice to have the closet organized) still had some of my Apple Valley Naturals Face Soap in the closet. PS I don’t get anything if you buy from them they are just a good local company for me and I like to promote good ;) So anyway, I went back to natural soap, I’m still using a brand name moisturizer but I’m doing some research on that. I wanted to use up what I have before buying something new.

Secondly I am not washing morning and night anymore, only after wearing make-up and after working out. That’s it, so far I haven’t noticed and increase in oil in fact I seem a little dry. That might be the weather but hey whatever works.  I’m convinced that stripping the oils more often (ie washing day and night) was increasing my oil production.

Things to look for in your natural wash:

  • Do you know all the ingredients in the product?
  • Do any of  the ingredients say some thing like for color or added for fragrance? If so those are added and unnecessary ingredients.

Honestly I know it seems simple but that is about it.

So what about you? Do  you wash your face morning and night? Just after sweat sessions, Only after make-up? What is your routine? Also do you have any natural facial cleansers you suggest I try once what I have is out?
